According to CoreLogic, Hawaii has the lowest property tax rate, 0.31 percent, while Illinois has the highest rate in the country, 2.67 percent.
The average median property tax rate in the nation is 1.31 percent, meaning with a house valued at $200,000, a homeowner is paying (on average) $2,620 annually on total property tax.
Typically, the states with high property tax rates have multiple levels of tax collection while the states with low property tax rates only have a single level of tax collection at the county level.
Sixteen states ( 31% of the nation) have a median property tax rate of less than 1%. Twenty eight states (55% of the nation) have a median property tax rate in between 1% to 2% including California with the property tax rate of 1.12% percent. Seven states (14% of the nation) with the highest median property tax rate (more than 2%) are Illinois, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Texas, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania respectively.
